NO Cats

1/28/18: We have had the pleasure of having this gentle giant in my home for about 4 months now, and he has to be one of the biggest sweeties ever. One of Gendry's favorite things to do is grab one of his many toys and push them off the bed and chase after them.

We have not introduced him to cats because his last foster said he does not do so well so, NO CATS! But other than that, he does great with other dogs, even ones that bully him. He will just walk away. Since Gendry is not a barker, he expresses his feeling through his big brown eyes and strong tail.

When it comes to kenneling Gendry, a wire kennel does not work. He finds a way to get out every time, even if it is ratchet strapped and zip tied together. We have found that the full plastic kennel with ratchet straps around it has kept him in.

When we got him he was not trained, but in the past few months, we have been working very hard on the basics. So far we have got Gendry to "sit", "wait", "off", and recently got him to "lay down". Although he knows what "off" means it does not mean he wants to get down every time because he loves being where ever you are. Gendry is so amazing with children, he views them as his best friend and just wants to play. He has a very gentle mouth and wouldn't hurt a fly.

Gendry's favorite time of day is bedtime time; he loves climbing into bed and snoring all night long. Once he is asleep, he will sleep through the entire night and he will not move at all. Gendry is also one of the biggest cuddle bugs you can find and has no boundaries what so ever.

Gendry would be a wonderful dog for your family!

10/28/17: I've only had Gendry for three days and it's hard to believe he acted like a puppy when I first brought him home.  I would now describe him as a gentle giant (who doesn't know how big he is) that loves people!!!  Gendry does not like cats, not even pretend cats. He likes to play toys with my 6-year-old son and will play his version of fetch with me  Gendry likes to get a hug before he will release the ball.  We are working on "drop".  He loves to be hugged and massaged.  He will entertain himself for an hour or so with bones or toys. Gendry prefers to be near his people.  He will take a nap on his blankets or in his bed; he will even use a toy as a pillow.  Oh, and he can snore.  It's not too loud...it's adorable.

Gendry is a fast learner.  He knows "sit", "down" and "sit up" which is our version of a puppy sit-up.  He is working on "shake" & "speak".  We have also worked on "off" and he does OK when it comes to the sofa but it is a challenge to get him off the bed.  Once he is comfortable, Gendry is dead weight and he looks at you with his eyes that seem to say "Please?????".   Now that we have a doggie bed for him he does like to lay in that and chew on his chew toys.

We love to go for walks using a walking harness (the volunteers at the shelter started using with him); Gendry is learning to walk with me instead of pulling me.  He still has a way to go, but in the three days we've been working on it, he has come a long way.  We do walk to the elementary school to get my son in the afternoon.  Gendry loves the attention he gets from the students.

I did try to use a wire kennel for Gendry but he learned how to escape within minutes.  During his hour of freedom, he did check out the garbage and move (without chewing) a few of our shoes to a different room.  He also played with his toys while I was gone.  I now just leave him in my bedroom with a few of his favorite chew toys.  Or I take him with me.  In the car, he should be tethered or you may find him trying to drive with you.

I also need to mention Gendry is a handsome dog! He has tiger-like markings on his back that are very unique.  His face is expressive and his quirky ears add to his personality.  Whenever we meet someone new, they comment on his beauty.

I am so excited for Gendry to find his forever home.
